San Francisco Preschool Teacher Featured on Cover of Teaching Young Children
NAEYC’s Teaching Young Children Celebrates and Supports the Work of Preschool Teacher
(San Francisco) - Isauro Michael Escamilla, a master preschool teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District, is being recognized for his work by being featured on the cover of NAEYC’s Teaching Young Children (TYC).
“We are pleased to be featuring Michael on the cover of TYC,” said Editor-in-Chief Derry Koralek. “He is a committed, passionate educator who believes that good teachers must also be good learners."
Escamilla is one of a series of excellent preschool educators chosen to be featured on the cover of TYC, which is distributed to 45,000 readers nationwide. Each issue provides useful, research-based ideas that preschool teachers can use in their work with children and families. TYC is also available in Spanish as Tesoros y Colores.
Escamilla grew up believing that “teaching was the best thing you could do.” As a teenager, he taught reading and writing to illiterate adults in rural Mexico. Now a veteran teacher, Escamilla has earned his associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees and is a veteran teacher at Las Americas Child Development Center in the Mission District.
Escamilla believes in the importance of connecting all children with nature. He put this belief into action a few years ago, when he spearheaded the renovation of the center’s neglected school yard. As a result, the space has been transformed into a lush green space with plants, a vegetable garden, and small fruit trees that children of all ages now enjoy.
In the future, Escamilla plans to continue teaching. “If I can instill a passion in children for learning and discovering, then I am on the right track,” he says.
