If you’re passionate about NAEYC’s vision and mission, believe deeply in our core values and beliefs, and have an effective track record of governance and leadership, you should consider applying for nomination to the NAEYC Governing Board.
Only NAEYC members in good standing are eligible for Board service. Any such member is welcome to apply for consideration by the Nominating Committee, which is responsible for constructing each year’s slate. Inclusion on the slate is contingent upon completion of background checks. Additionally, the following limitations have been placed on the selection of candidates:
- A person shall not be a candidate for any other position (officer or otherwise) while serving a term on the Board, with the exception of individuals appointed to complete an unexpired term.
- Individuals who have had a contract with NAEYC or any of its Affiliates within 12 months of the date of application are not eligible for consideration as a potential candidate (does not include honoraria).
- No former employee of NAEYC should be considered for Board service until three (3) years have passed since their last day of employment.
- It is recognized that occasionally a person with prior Board experience might represent the combination of qualities most needed by the organization, thus the possibility of nominating a person with prior Board experience is not eliminated.
Please review the position descriptions for various Board roles as well as the NAEYC Board Code of Ethics to which all Board members agree to adhere. Position descriptions outline the responsibilities, time commitments and qualifications required for each position: President-elect (includes President and Past President), Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Board Member At Large, and Student Board Member.
Any current member is eligible for consideration by the Nominating Panel. The process begins with an online application that includes contact and demographic information, a resume of relevant professional experience, and a 2-page personal statement.
Additionally, applicants are asked to provide three (3) references. References are contacted electronically and asked to complete a short survey as a background check. The submitted information is reviewed by the Nominating Panel. The review is used to identify potential candidates who are then asked to participate in a group interview with the Panel at the NAEYC Headquarters in September. Based on the interviews, the Panel recommends the final slate to the Governing Board for approval, and the slate is presented to the NAEYC membership for election.
