Ethics

NAEYC offers a range of resources, including books, position statements, videos, and other materials that support and help reinforce the guidelines set forth in the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.

Ethics and the Early Childhood Educator

The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct offers early childhood educators guidelines for responsible behavior and sets forth a common basis for resolving ethical dilemmas encountered in early education. NAEYC recently released Ethics and the Early Childhood Educator (2nd ed.), which presents examples and questions that clarify key points about ethical conduct that will inform decision making while stimulating reflection on the critical issues facing early childhood educators.

Positions Statements

In 2011, NAEYC reaffirmed and updated the Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment position statement. The position statement is available for download in English or Spanish. Supplements for early childhood program administrators and early childhood adult educators are also available.

Visit the Position Statements on Ethical Conduct page.

NAEYC Code Videos

In a series of videos produced by NAEYC, author Stephanie Feeney and NAEYC Senior Director for Professional Development Peter Pizzolongo discuss the history of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct's development and subsequent revisions, the importance of a code of ethics for a profession, and the three elements of the NAEYC Code.

View the introduction below and visit the videos page for the complete series.

NAEYC Code Toolkit

These resources provide professional development specialists with the tools to conduct sessions on understanding and using the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment.

  • Code of Ethical Conduct PowerPoint Presentation, based on activities from the NAEYC publication Teaching the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.
  • Applying the NAEYC Code, handout of situations with ethical dimensions for group problem solving.
  • NAEYC Publications that Address Professional Ethics, a bibliography of NAEYC resources on ethics.

Focus on Ethics

Focus on Ethics, coedited by Stephanie Feeney and Nancy Freeman, is a column appearing in Young Children that features two kinds of alternating articles. The first presents dilemmas that early childhood educators encounter as they work with young children and their families. The second provides analysis of the dilemma presented in the previous column. These columns reflect the field's current best thinking by answering the question "What should an ethical early childhood educator do?"

Visit the Focus on Ethics page to view recent columns.
