New Haven preschool teacher featured on cover of Teaching Young Children magazine

New Haven Public School Teacher Elizabeth Reyes to appear in the December/January issue of Teaching Young Children, NAEYC’s magazine for preschool educators

(New Haven, Conn.) – Elizabeth Reyes, a preschool teacher at Christopher Columbus Family Academy, is being featured on the cover of the December/January issue of Teaching Young Children (TYC).

Reyes is one of a series of excellent educators chosen to appear on the cover of TYC, which is distributed to 45,000 readers. TYC is published five times a year by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Each issue provides useful, research-based ideas that preschool teachers can use in their work.

“Elizabeth is an exceptional educator,” said New Haven Public Schools education coordinator Gail Corbett. “She is exemplary on so many levels. She maintains a warm, inviting, rich classroom environment. She is supportive of families and an advocate for children, and she works hard to meet every child’s specific needs. I am proud to see her being recognized for her work.”

Reyes will appear on the cover of the magazine and in a corresponding interview in which she discusses how she became a preschool teacher, her teaching philosophy, and her plans for the future.

Reyes currently teaches a dual language class of preschoolers who are learning English and Spanish in the School Readiness Program at Christopher Columbus Family Academy.

A former nurse assistant, Reyes studied theology before deciding to become a teacher. “I knew I wanted to help others and make a positive impact in someone’s life,” she said. She has now been teaching for 13 years.

In the future she hopes to continue to further her education and become a school administrator.

TYC is also available in Spanish as Tesoros y Colores. For more information on TYC and to purchase the latest issue, visit www.naeyc.org/tyc.
