Mountain Brook teacher featured on cover of Teaching Young Children magazine

Preschool teacher Scott Precise to appear in the June/July issue of Teaching Young Children, NAEYC’s magazine for preschool educators

(Mountain Brook, Ala.) – Scott Precise, a preschool teacher at Canterbury Child Development Center in Mountain Brook, Alabama, is being recognized for his work by being featured on the cover of the June/July issue of NAEYC’s Teaching Young Children (TYC).

Precise is one of a series of excellent preschool educators chosen to be featured on the cover of TYC, which is distributed to 45,000 readers nationwide. Published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), each issue provides useful, research-based ideas that preschool teachers can use in their work with children and families.

“We are thrilled Scott is being featured in TYC.” said Angie Blackwell, director of Canterbury Child Development Center. “He is an excellent teacher who works hard to make learning fun for children and to teach in interesting, creative ways.”

In addition to appearing on the cover TYC, Precise will also be featured in a corresponding interview in which he talks candidly about why he became a teacher, the joys and challenges of his work, and his future goals.

Precise didn’t start out his career in the classroom – his original plan was to become a children’s minister. But after earning his master’s of divinity at Emory University, he decided to spend a year teaching 4-year-olds. “I fell in love with teaching, and rerouted my career plans,” he said. He has now been teaching for over a decade.

Precise currently teaches a class of 4- and 5-year old children. He describes his teaching style as imaginative, structured, and individualized, and says he and his fellow teachers work hard to make their program a place where children want to come.

“The children love being with their teachers, and their teachers love being with them, and the parents appreciate that. They feel like Canterbury is a place where their children are taken care of, they’re loved, they’re safe, and they learn,” he said.
