Voter Registration Information for State of Alaska


To register to vote in the State of Alaska, an individual must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Reside in Alaska
  • Be at least 18 years old or will be within 90 days of completing voter registration application
  • Have not been convicted of a felony (unless voting rights have been restored)
  • Are not registered to vote in another state (unless willing to cancel registration in the other state)

Must register to vote at least 30 days before the election, except in a presidential election (same day registration is allowed for presidential elections). Can select party affiliation at the polls.

Can register to vote in person or obtain a mail-in application from:

  • All Division of Motor Vehicle offices
  • City or borough clerk offices
  • Voter registrar in your community
  • Agencies serving people with disabilities
  • Public assistance agencies
  • Participating public libraries
  • Tribal government offices
  • Legislative information offices
  • Political party offices
  • Recruitment offices of the armed forces of the United States located in Alaska
  • Division of Elections Office

You can also obtain an online voter registration application or register to vote online.

Absentee Voting:

You may vote absentee in person 15 days before an election and on Election Day at the Regional Elections Office or absentee voting location. Absentee ballot applications are available and can be requested and turned in anytime for each calendar year, up to 7 days before each election for any state elections during that year. To receive an absentee ballot by mail, you must first send an application so that your voter registration can be verified.

An absentee application is also available.  

The voter's signature on the envelope must be witnessed. If the voter wishes to return the ballot by mail, it must be mailed no later than Election Day.

Those who wish to absentee vote in person must do so no later than Election Day.

If the ballot is to be faxed, it must be voted, witnessed and received by the appropriate fax in the Director's Office by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

If the voter is voting absentee by personal representative, the representative must bring the voted ballot back to the Election Official no later than 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
