Using Research on Early Childhood Development and Education

NAEYC Resources

Besides the information and links on this section of NAEYC's Web site, also see

NAEYC's scholarly journal, Early Childhood Research Quarterly. ECRQ publishes peer-reviewed research on many topics. Each article includes implications for policy and practice. The Table of Contents and abstracts are available on line, along with subscription information. NAEYC members may subscribe at a reduced rate. Many college and university libraries have ECRQ or allow students and faculty to access it on line.

The "Critical Issues" section of NAEYC's Web site. This section focuses on topics that are significant for the early childhood field, and provides quick summaries and links to research on each topic.

NAEYC position statements, each of which has a detailed reference list of books and articles to support NAEYC's positions on issues such as learning to read and write; early childhood mathematics; school readiness; curriculum, assessment, and program evaluation; and more.

NAEYC's journal Young Children
Articles are geared toward practitioners, but most have references to research that supports the authors' suggestions for practice.

More in-depth discussions of research on specific topics are found in Young Children's "Research in Review" columns, published several times a year.  The entire set of columns may be retrieved by searching for "Research in Review" or they may be searched by topic area.

Teacher research is discussed and presented in the on-line "Voices of Practitioners" section of Young Children's "Beyond the Journal" Website: www.journal.naeyc.org/btj/vp/

Books in NAEYC's catalog
Books may be searched by topic. NAEYC does not publish technical research publications, but books include more or less extended references to research, depending on the book's topic and intended audience. [Note that the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) attempts through its publications program to provide a forum for discussion of major issues and ideas in our field. The views expressed or implied in its books are not necessarily those of the Association]

NAEYC conferences
NAEYC's Annual Conference has a Research Track. Besides regular sessions, the Research Track also includes a poster session where researchers display summaries of their studies and discuss the work with those attending. All Research Track sessions have been peer-reviewed. The National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development features many sessions presented by leading early childhood researchers.

NAEYC members may join "Interest Forums" on various topics, including a forum on Research, Policy, and Practice in Early Care and Education.
