WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is pleased to announce our five new Board members to the association’s national Governing Board.

Ann McClain
Ann McClain Elected to NAEYC Governing Board
WASHINGTON D.C.—The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is pleased to announce the election of Ann McClain Terrell as President-Elect to the association’s national governing board. She will serve a 4-year term beginning June 1, 2019.
Ann McClain Terrell has 45 years of professional experience in the field of education, primarily in early childhood education. She is now an adjunct early childhood education professor for Concordia University after serving as the executive director of the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation, Inc., and an administrator in the Milwaukee Public Schools district, leading the departments of Innovation and Early Childhood Education. Additionally, Ann mentors emerging early childhood leaders.
Ann earned a Master of Science degree in educational leadership from Cardinal Stritch University, a Master of Science degree in cultural foundations of education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a Bachelor of Science degree in education from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and an associate degree in early childhood education from Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Ann’s board service includes the Educare Milwaukee Shared Governance Committee, Cardinal Stritch University College of Educational Leadership Advisory Committee, Lakeland University Board of Trustees, the National School Foundation Association Board of Directors, and the Urban Ecology Center Board of Directors. Previously she also served on the NAEYC Governing Board and the Wisconsin Governor’s Early Childhood Advisory Council.
In 2016 Ann was recognized as one of the most influential African Americans in Wisconsin. Ann received the Black Women’s Network Legacy of Leadership in Education Award in 2008; the National Black Child Development Institute Milwaukee Affiliate Early Childhood Recognition Award in 2007; and the Community Brainstorming Conference Children’s Advocacy Award in 2004. She was appointed chair of Governor Doyle’s 2004 Quality Counts Early Childhood Task Force, which led to the creation of YoungStar, Wisconsin’s child care quality rating and improvement system. In 2000 she was selected as a Children’s Defense Fund Early Childhood Leadership Fellow. Ann is the author of the recently published book, Graceful Leadership in Early Childhood Education.

The NAEYC Governing Board provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Officers and most Board members are elected by the association’s 60,000 members. Candidates for the competitive slate are chosen for their broad-based knowledge of issues affecting high-quality early learning and the early childhood profession. Elected along with Ann were Anthony Broughton, Assistant Professor/Early Childhood Coordinator, Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC, was elected as Board Member At-Large; Nicol Russell, Deputy Associate Superintendent of Early Childhood and Head Start State Collaboration Director, Arizona Department of Education, Phoenix, AZ, was elected as a Board Member At-Large; Yohana I. Quiroz, Chief Operations Officer, Felton Institute and Doctoral Student, San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA, was elected Student Board Member. A newly appointed member will also join the 17-member board in June: Uhriel Bedoya, Country Manager for Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda and Haiti at Mastercard, Miami, FL, will serve as a Board Member At-Large.

Anthony Broughton Elected to NAEYC Governing Board
WASHINGTON D.C.—The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is pleased to announce the election of Anthony Broughton as Board Member At-Large to the association’s national governing board. He will serve a 4-year term beginning June 1, 2019.
Anthony Broughton serves as a professor/early childhood coordinator at Claflin University, School of Education. Since his high school days as a South Carolina teacher cadet, in Cross, South Carolina, to becoming a certified kindergarten–first grade teacher, ensuring equity and excellence in education has been the heart of Dr. Anthony Broughton’s career. Affectionately known as “MiSTER B or Dr. B.” by teachers and young/tiny scholars worldwide, Dr. B. supports teachers in interweaving music and movement into their curriculums to foster all areas of development.
He is an author and illustrator and a children’s musical artist. Dr. B. earned a PhD in early childhood education by the age of 30, and he holds certificates from Cornell University and Harvard University. Before becoming a professor/early childhood coordinator at Claflin University, Dr. B. worked for the South Carolina Department of Education as a 4K regional coordinator, ensuring high-quality early learning statewide. Prior to that, he served as an administrator for the then NAEYC-accredited Benedict College Child Development Center, which earned accreditation under his tutelage. Dr. B. contributes to the field through research, service with several organizations—such as Call Me M.I.S.T.E.R., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and his LLC—and through advocacy with the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children as a board member.

Nicol Russell Elected to NAEYC Governing Board
WASHINGTON D.C.—The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is pleased to announce the election of Nicol Russell as Board Member At-Large to the association’s national governing board. She will serve a 4-year term beginning June 1, 2019.
Nicol Russell currently serves as the deputy associate superintendent for early childhood at the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) and the Director of the Arizona Head Start State Collaboration Office (HSSCO). In these roles, she provides oversight for Arizona’s administration of the Preschool Development Grant, implementation of IDEA Part B, Section 619 (Early Childhood Special Education), and execution of the HSSCO grant. Nicol believes the best way to support high quality early learning for children is to support the adults (families and practitioners) in children’s lives with high-quality assistance. Thus, Nicol and her team have developed a mission of providing leadership and support to schools, organizations, educators, families, and communities in implementing programs that assist all children from birth through age 8 to become successful lifelong learners. Her vision is to ultimately improve the well-being of children, families, and communities.
Nicol began her career in education as a librarian’s assistant at her local Boys & Girls Club in Wai’anae, Hawai’i. Since then, she has worked as a classroom assistant, teacher (general and special education), center director of a private child care, education program specialist, and the state’s 619 coordinator. She has also served as the treasurer for the National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education (NAECS-SDE), and she currently serves as the early childhood education representative on three statewide governing boards in Arizona.
Nicol holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and a master’s degree in early childhood education with an emphasis in early childhood leadership from Northern Arizona University. She is also currently enrolled in a doctoral program for educational leadership.

Yohana Quiroz Elected to NAEYC Governing Board
WASHINGTON D.C.—The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is pleased to announce the election of Yohana Quiroz as Board Student Member to the association’s national governing board. She will serve a 2-year term beginning June 1, 2019.
Yohana Quiroz serves as the chief operations officer at Felton Institute, a nonprofit agency in San Francisco, California. She is responsible for leading the Children, Youth, Family, and Transitional Age Youth Division, which includes early care and education, early intervention and inclusion, behavioral/mental health, and family support services. The agency serves 800 clients, with a staff of 155 and a budget of $10 million in local, state, federal, and private funding. In addition to her work with Felton Institute, Yohana is an adjunct professor in the Child and Adolescent Development Department at San Francisco State University.
Yohana is an accomplished practitioner, educator, and community leader with more than two decades of experience in the early care and education field. She has devoted her career to issues affecting young children and youth, including pregnant and parenting teens, children with special needs, and underserved populations. Her firsthand knowledge as a parent and of the issues impacting these services has instilled in her a passion for equity, social justice, coalition building, advocacy, and systems change.
Yohana is involved in several committees influencing decisions on policies, investments, and workforce initiatives in the early childhood field. For the last two years, she has been the chair of the San Francisco Office of Early Care and Education’s Citizens Advisory Committee.
Yohana holds a BA in child and adolescent development and an MA in organization and leadership in education, and she is currently a doctoral student in San Francisco State University’s educational leadership program.

Uhriel Bedoya Appointed to NAEYC Governing Board
WASHINGTON D.C.—The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Uhriel Bedoya as Board Member At-Large to the association’s national governing board. He will serve a 4-year term beginning June 1, 2019.
Uhriel Bedoya joined Mastercard in 2017 as the Country Manager for Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda, and Haiti. Uhriel’s responsibilities include identifying and developing opportunities with commercial clients and government entities, developing long-term strategies for brand building, product management, marketing and emerging digital technologies in those important Caribbean markets.
Uhriel comes to Mastercard with a wide range of experiences in Financial Services and Payments Technology. After a short stint at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Uhriel joined M&T Bank as Internal Consultant and Project Manager. After four years at M&T Bank becoming Relationship Manager for International Commercial Lending in Latin America, he moved to RBC Capital Markets as Director, Relationship Management for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean responsible for all Financial Institutions in the region. He worked at Royal Bank of Canada for over seven years his last roles concurrently as Managing Director, Business Development for RBC Caribbean and as Head of Corporate Banking for RBC Royal Bank Jamaica. He left banking for Payments Technology joining Visa as Director for Client Services where he managed a team of Operational Relationship Managers covering over six jurisdictions and more than 50 clients in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Uhriel holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (summa cum laude) from Claflin University, and two Master’s Degrees from the University of Pennsylvania’s Lauder Institute – an MBA in Finance and Business Public Policy from The Wharton School, and a Master of Arts in International Studies from the School of Arts and Sciences.
