Biography
Brian Johnson, Ph.D., J.D. is assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion for James Madison College at Michigan State University (MSU). Prior to this role, he served as associate institute director for MSU Extension’s Children and Youth Institute, and assistant professor in Human Development and Family Studies. In this capacity, he was responsible for initiating and coordinating educational programming and applied research programs in the areas of early childhood education and youth development across Michigan.
Brian’s scholarly interests focus on examining the constitutionality of laws and policies that affect youth and college-age populations. He also has a particular interest in exploring and increasing sense of belonging among students at the college level. Brian has extensive experience directing pipeline, recruitment, and retention programs. His pipeline programs focus on preparing students for college during the K-12 years, and ensuring they receive resources for success throughout their college experience. Brian's advising, recruitment and retention initiatives have been recognized at the university and state levels.
