DRAFT Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators

A Message to the Early Childhood Field
The second draft of the Leveling of the Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators is now available. The intention of the leveling is to serve as a guide to help the early childhood ecosystem (practitioners, professional preparation programs, accreditors, licensing bodies, etc.) understand the level of knowledge and skills related to the standards and competencies they need to master or support in their professional roles.
The first round of public comment on the leveling produced a robust response, with the majority weighing in expressing support for the draft. However, there were important concerns raised with the draft as well.
- The differentiation between ECE II and ECE III levels was not significant enough. The value-add of each level needs to be evident.
- Some felt that the expectations at each level were too ambitious and others felt the expectations were not ambitious enough.
- The content (beyond just the early childhood content) of the programs that prepare individuals for ECE I, II and III roles needs to be more evident in the leveling document.
We heard you, and after reviewing feedback and with input from a group of representatives from ECE I, II and III professional preparation programs, NAEYC is pleased to release this second draft of the leveling. The public comment period for this draft is now closed.
Thank you for your continued contributions to this work!
