Elinor Wonders Why, the newest series from PBS KIDS, centers around Elinor, an observant and curious bunny rabbit, and her friends Ari, a funny and imaginative bat, and Olive, a perceptive and warm elephant. In each episode, Elinor models the foundational practices of science inquiry and engineering design -- including her amazing powers of observation and willingness to ask questions and investigate. Elinor Wonders Why encourages children and parents to ask their own questions and experience the joy of discovery and understanding together.
As we highlight Elinor’s world, NAEYC members will learn more about the wonderful array of FREE resources available in English and Spanish and develop new ways to ignite children’s early science and literacy learning and fortify the school-home connection. Joined by PBS KIDS staff, advisors, and educators who have helped develop just in time digital games and media-rich resources, the goal of the webinar is to Illustrate learning resource features and opportunities for immediate use in the classroom and family childcare programs, as well as remote learning.

Creating Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms

On April 12, 2018, NAEYC hosted a webinar on the topic “Creating Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms.” In the United States, the number of young children who have experienced a traumatic event in their lives is increasing. As early childhood educators, we are often the first responders for identifying individual needs and setting up strategies that lead to positive learning environments. This webinar identifies behavioral signs that children dealing with trauma may exhibit, as well as effective strategies that can be used to create trauma-sensitive classrooms. Presenters include: Barbara Sorrels, executive director of The Institute for Childhood Education and author of the award-winning book Reaching and Teaching Children Exposed to Trauma, and Katie Statman-Weils, an adjunct instructor at Portland State University who focuses on equity and guidance strategies that improve social and emotional development and self-regulation for all learners.
